Putting a baby to sleep was made possible by Pavlov’s dogs. If you have heard of Ivan Pavlov and his dogs experiment then you know and appreciate the conditioning benefits. The training involved was that he taught his dogs that when the bell chimes here they would salivate and know it was a cue to feed. The dogs overtime got used to timetable and associated a bell ring with food. Easy, right? Each time the bell rang the dogs would go to the place they were served with food as they knew it was eating time. But, in this article the talk is not about dog rather babies.

The training aspect of both the dogs and the baby are similarly the only difference is that we know the baby is not a dog. Pick your baby’s sleeping cues by following your baby’s routine.

The sleeping cues are helpful to your baby as you will know the sleeping time and the behavior that should tell your it is time to sleep.

The concept is great right? It is not easy to implement as it is easy to write. Some elements need to taken into account for this concept to work.

One, you need a constant organized timetable for the baby on a daily basis. The reason behind this is that a schedule leads to consistency which to predictability. If the schedule is followed constantly on a daily basis you will know what to expect and also what follows after that and be able to know the sleep cue.

Sometimes it is good to leave the baby to sleep on their own and other times you help put the baby to sleep.

During the times when you decide that you want to put the baby to sleep make sure you do it consistently and gently.

When the baby is being swayed it is assisted to sleep by some rhythms. Make sure that you sway the baby gently because if you do it fast the baby will not think it is sleep time instead it will think it is time for play.

In case you do not have a schedule it is about time to draft one. One good cue is time for taking a bath. Children pick schedules faster so if you start it by bathing followed by activities geared towards bedtime by the time you tell the child to go to sleep it will be easy.

We all know that babies are more comfortable in the womb as this is where their lives begin. A baby will feel quite insecure if they came into the world with a lot of vitality. A baby should be assisted to shift from womb to the world smoothly as this will ensure they sleep better.
